Cranial Molding Helmets

1.) Your Baby's Head

If you have seen that your child is developing a persistent flat spot on the back or side of their head, it could be that they are developing what is called positional plagiocephaly. This is also referred to as "flattened head syndrome" by some individuals. This can happen when your baby sleeps in the same position, for example. Due to the soft nature of their skull, the shape of your baby's head can take on an abnormal shape if left untreated.

2.) Cranial Molding Helmets

Special helmets are used and are provided by individuals known as licensed "orthotists". These individuals can help your child achieve the results that they deserve. In essence, what happens is that your child will wear this special helmet and what happens is their head will be allowed to grow where there is an opening allowed. Their head will be held at the site where growth is currently normal. In this fashion then, the child will move toward a more "normal' shape as time goes on.

Typically, what will be needed is that your child goes in for periodic check ups with your local orthotist. At this point the brace provider will be able to see where growth is taking place and allow more room in the helmet for growth where it is needed. Keeping up with your appointments is crucial when using a cranial molding helmet.

3.) Reasons Why You Need To Get This From an Orthotist

It is important to see a specialist in the bracing field for these helmets. Cranial molding helmets are considered to be "orthoses" and it is best to work with a licensed professional in the field. Other medical professionals may claim to provide this service to your child, but this is the time for you to be very critical of who is handling your baby's head. The window for improvement of your baby's head is limited and getting the job done right requires experience.

4.) Insurance & Cost of A Cranial Molding Helmet

The cost of the helmet may be totally covered by your insurance. How great is that!? This is not always the case and it basically comes down to the terms that are part of your health insurance plan. Many times, if the helmet is not covered at 100 %, then the majority of the helmet could be covered. When you go into see your local orthotist for your baby's first appointment bring your insurance care, ID and prescription with you.
